More Information
Fernand Cian, an Italian sculptor born in Carrara in 1886, studied in Paris under Laporte-Blavisy, (1867-1923) and exhibited at the Salon de la Societe des Artistes Francais, 1911-1928. For its subject, drawn from pagan antiquity, composition, and for the skillful quality of the modeling, this sculpture recalls the work of Clodion (1738-1814). Families such as the Rothschilds commissioned Cian to create larger, 18th century style sculptures such as this terracotta in the rococo style.
