Lion Inkwell

Earthenware (stoneware) in the form of a standing lion, head turned to the left, tongue extended, ring through its nose with links of earthenware chain attached. In the top center of the lion’s back is a small circular removable well and another removable well with strainer.  Left flank inscribed “Duingen” 1840″

Provenance

The private collection of Paul and Louise Bernheimer; known for their Harvard Square gallery, Bernheimer’s Antique Arts (1963-1992); which was an off-shoot of one of the most prominent art businesses in Europe, L. Bernheimer of Munich, Germany, founded in 1864.
