17th Century Northern Italian Writing Commode

Artist/Maker: Italian Writing Commode
Description: An important example of the chest of drawers / desk in two parts, with dark tinted molding overall. The three long drawers fronts decorated with intarsia, each highlighting squirrels, putti, falcons and lions and centering panels with mythological subjects including a River God and Cain and Abel. The sides with stacked panels of regional landscapes with horses, lions, birds, pine and cypress trees. The bronze pulls are period and most likely re-placed the original turned pull knobs at an early date.

The interior fitted with a shaped bank of drawers and compartments, the fronts with individual regional scenics with architecture within a border.

Each bracket foot inlaid with a mermaid.
